PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electroluminescence element which has excellent membrane stability and durability, has good luminescent properties at a low voltage and is easily manufacturable and an optical wavelength conversion method using this electroluminescence element. SOLUTION: The electroluminescence element is provided with electrodes on both surfaces of a laminate consisting of a photoelectric conversion layer and an electroluminescence layer, in which the compound expressed by formula (1) is incorporated into the photoelectric conversion layer and the optical wavelength conversion method comprises providing both surfaces of the laminate consisting of the photoelectric conversion layer containing a charge generating material and the electroluminescence layer with the electrodes, irradiating these layers with the light of a charge generating material absorption region and further impressing a voltage to the electrodes to generate the light from a light emitting element substance, in which the electroluminescence element is used.
