PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize lower fuel consumption by optimally controlling a compression ratio at the time of self-ignition combustion in a compressed self-ignition internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Self-ignition combustion is performed in a low rotation and low load operating area (S2), and the compression ratio in a specific operation area with especially low rotation and low load is set to an especially low value (S10, for example, 12), otherwise the compression ratio is high as normal (S7, for example, 18). In a specific operation area, the compression ratio is made low, and a minus overlap period of an intake valve and an exhaust valve is formed (S11).
