PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat discharge lamp of which a discharge vessel is hardly broken when decompressed for enclosing the discharge gas. SOLUTION: For a discharge vessel consisting of a front glass substrate 1, a rear glass substrate 5, and an outer frame glass 3 for keeping an interval between the both glass substrates, a pillar 4 arranged inside a discharge space is of a material different from that for the discharge vessel. With this, a flat discharge lamp is realized, of which, a discharge vessel is hardly broken even decompressed for enclosing the discharge gas. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
