<p>Benzoquinones are made by heating the corresponding p-nitrosophenol at below pH7 with water at 150-200 degrees C; in presence of a lower aldehyde or ketone, pref. acetone. The reaction is applied esp. to p-nitrosophenols substituted in one or both o-positions (to OH) with C3-12 alpha-branched alkyl, esp. mono- and di-tert. butyl. The products are readily reduced to the corresponding hydroquinones. Used as antioxidants for e.g. petrols, plastics, rubbers etc.</p> |
