PURPOSE: A method for preparing a positive electrode active material LixMn2O4 (x is 1-1.2) powder for a lithium secondary battery by using a sol-gel method, a positive electrode active material prepared by the method and a substrate obtained by using the sol or gel of the active material are provided, to improve specific surface area, crystallinity and homogeneity and to reduce particle size distribution of LixMn2O4 powder. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of dissolving lithium acetate or lithium nitrate and manganese acetate or manganese nitrate in the ratio of 1-1.2 : 2 by mol in ethanol; adding poly(vinyl butyral) as a chelating agent to the solution to make the molar ratio of the chelating agent to the total metal ions be 0.1-3 and to prepare an ethanol mixture solution; heating the mixture solution at 70-90 deg.C to prepare a sol; heating slowly the sol to prepare a gel precursor; and calcining the gel precursor. Preferably the calcination is carried out at a temperature of 200-900 deg.C for 1-50 hours under inert gas or oxidative atmosphere.
