<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination unit which exhibits a high level of constancy at fluctuating operating temperature, emits white light and has a particularly good color reproduction and a high efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The illumination unit has at least one LED as a light source, the LED emitting primary radiation in the range of 300 to 430 nm. This radiation is completely converted into longer-wave radiation by phosphors which are exposed to the primary radiation of the LED. The conversion is performed at least by using a phosphor which emits green having a peak emission wavelength of 495 to 540 nm and originates from the class of the Ce-activated sialons, the sialons being represented by formula, M<SB>p/2</SB>Si<SB>12-p-q</SB>Al<SB>p+q</SB>O<SB>q</SB>N<SB>16-q</SB>: Ce<SP>3+</SP>, where M is Ca alone or combined with Sr; q is 0 to 2.5; and p is 1.5 to 3. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
