<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a rotating position of a rotor, while restraining upsizing, simplifying the structure, and attaining cost reduction. <P>SOLUTION: A position detecting device 10 for detecting a rotating position of the rotor 6 is arranged so as to face magnetic pole protrusions 7 of the rotor 6 from the axial direction thereof, so that the magnetic pole protrusions 7 are made to serve as objects to be detected. The position detecting device 10 comprises two sets of magnetic sensors 11. A protruding part 8, which forms a step-off height in the axial direction for the other magnetic pole protrusion 7, is provided on one magnetic pole protrusion 7. The magnetic pole protrusions 7 are used as the objects to be detected for detection of the rotational position of the rotor 6, thus the dedicated object to be detected is not required, even for the detection of the rotational position of the rotor 6.
