PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost and high-safety alkaline battery which can surely restrain alkaline electrolyte solution from leaking out. SOLUTION: With the alkaline battery 1 with an opening of a positive electrode can 2 sealed with a sealing part including a negative electrode terminal 8 through a gasket, a porous and permeable matter is interposed between the gasket 7 and the negative electrode terminal 8 as a buffer material 20 for restraining leaking out of alkaline electrolyte solution. As the buffer material, liquid urethane foam is used. With this, the alkaline solution leaked due to a temperature rise of the inner pressure of the battery caused by reverse insertion of a battery or a short circuit is absorbed and retained by the buffer material 20, leakage to the outside the battery is restrained.
