PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a liquid crystal element for the like and a display device capable of effectively performing gradation display without generating the reduction of contrast, the flicker of display, cross-talking or the like. SOLUTION: In the method for multiplex driving the liquid crystal element or the like constituted of holding a liquid crystal layer between a substrate having scanning electrodes X1, X2,... and a substrate having signal electrodes Y1, Y2,..., a plurality of scanning electrodes are sequentially and simultaneously selected, the selection period is divided into a plurality of periods, voltage weighted in accordance with required display data is applied to each divided selection period to perform gradation display.
