PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystalline composition giving a high order parameter. SOLUTION: The liquid crystalline composition contains a host liquid crystal and a perylene pigment or phthaloperylene pigment having a substituent expressed by the general formula (a): (Het)<SB>j</SB>-ä(B<SP>1</SP>)<SB>p</SB>-(Q<SP>1</SP>)<SB>q</SB>-(B<SP>2</SP>)<SB>r</SB>}<SB>n</SB>-C<SP>1</SP>[wherein, Het is oxygen atom, NR<SP>a</SP>or S atom; B<SP>1</SP>and B<SP>2</SP>are each a di-valent aryl, a heteroaryl or a cyclic hydrocarbon group; Q<SP>1</SP>is a divalent linking group; C<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an alkoxy, an alkoxycarbonyl, an acyl or acyloxy; R<SP>a</SP>is H, an alkyl, an aryl, a heteroaryl or an acyl; (j) is 0 or 1; (p), (q) and (r) are each any of 0-5 integer; (n) is any of 1-3 integer; and (P+r)×(n) is 3-10].
