PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnet, in particular a proportional magnet for operating a hydraulic valve, having a simple constitution and mutual arrangement of individual constituent members, slight manufacturing and assembling labor time, superior in production of optimum cost, and having a sufficient means for pressure compensating between a first chamber and a second chamber of the optimum guide of a magnetic needle, between a plunger rod and a needle chamber and between the first chamber and an inner chamber of a valve casing. SOLUTION: The plunger rod (14) which is guided in an axial direction hole (13) provided a lower side magnetic pole piece (7) is a loose molded rod separate from the magnetic needle (10). The cross section of the molded rod is made different from that of the axial hole (13), and the cross section of the molded rod is smaller than that of the axial hole (13). Thereby a free cross sectional space in the axial direction (13), provided on the lower side magnetic pole piece (7), can be utilized as a pressure compensation passage (16) between the inner chamber of the valve casing of the hydraulic chamber and the first chamber (11) of a needle chamber (9) of the electromagnet (1).
