A switching arbiter system (Fig. 1) comprising information ports (10-n), a request table (15), and a set of individual arbiters (20-m), each of which accesses, at a given point in time, requests relating to a different predetermined group of information ports. A specific group of information ports is accessed sequentially by each of the individual arbiters in the set, and after each access, the request table is updated. Each of the individual arbiters operates independently of the other individual arbiters, and exchanges information only with the request table. Each of the individual arbiters thus accesses all of the groups of information ports during different time slots, and despatches its grants for execution only after it has accessed all of the ports. Additionally, a method of matching all the source and destination ports in an optical switching network, by first matching every requested source port to its corresponding destination port, and then matching every non-requested source port to a non-requested destination port. The requested source and destination ports are then connected for real data signal transfer, and the non-requested source and destination ports are connected for dummy signal flow, thereby ensuring a constant power flow through the network, regardless of traffic demand.
|
