A direct current shunt motor (DCSM) (1) and first (6) and second (7) on-board batteries start an internal combustion engine (ICE). Under normal start-up conditions an electric current is fed to an armature (10) and to an exciting coil (13) on the DCSM via the batteries that are connected in parallel. If battery voltage is poor or the ICE is started again in an economy mode, the coil's power is fed from the second battery after exciting the exciting coil with the first battery.
