The invention relates to a method for detecting clinically relevant fungal infections. A multiplex amplification reaction is carried out using DNA that has been isolated from patient material in order to detect clinically relevant fungal infections of the Candida and Aspergillus species, a region of the 18s RNA gene of the pathogen being amplified as the target. Only sequences of clinically relevant species are amplified.
