A method is disclosed to increase the data throughput on a wireless local area network (WLAN), e.g. IEEE 802.11 in the presence of intermittent interference, caused e.g. by an interfering fast frequency hopping device like a 'Bluetooth' device or a microwave. To this purpose, the quality of the channel is evaluated based on the packet error rate (PER) and the signal strength (RSSI). From these two values it is estimated if an interferer is present or not (540). If an interferer is present, the bit rate of the data packets is increased (522) and at the same time the packet length is shortened. If the PER is high but o interferer is present, the bit rate is reduced(522).
|
