A Wankel engine has a gas-tight crankcase assembled from a number of sections held together by bolts with a supplementary gas seal. Each bolt has a longitudinal locating groove with a further transverse groove intercepting the main groove at a tangent and resting in a metal rocking plate whose material is harder than that of the bolt. The arrangement creates a wear pattern on the bolt and forms an ideal seal in the vicinity of the groove ends. The center of the metal plate has an embedded T-shaped sealing stone extending a short way into the sealing ridge groove.
