A four stroke automotive engine has an inlet manifold with passages guiding a mixture of fuel and ambient air via open valves to the cylinder chamber. Each inlet passage has esp. a pivoting vortex flap (5a) attached to the passage sidewall. The vortex flaps are in-line on a common pivot and are raised or lowered by an actuator linked to an electronic control system. The system operates in accordance with engine speed and other operating parameters.
