In a process to determine the olfactory quality of substances in an air sample which are relevant to human response, air is drawn from the ambient air to a sampler with one or more sensor heads, and which determine the olfactory nature and concentration of the substances present. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly consisting of olfactory sensors, spectral analysis, chromatography, transport containers and computer software. The process and assembly further classify the smells present within pre-determined groups, with collected and memory data stored on an integrated circuit chip card.
