Penetrator comprises a housing (12) made from a thin steel shell (18) and a heavy metal inner part (20) containing a charge (14) and an ignition system (16). The heavy metal inner part has a tip section (22) fitted to the inner contour (28) of the steel shell and is connected to a sleeve section (24). Preferred Features: The tip section has a concave rear surface (30) which continuously changes into the sleeve section. The heavy metal inner part and the steel shell are joined together by a metallic adhesion promoter layer using a diffusion-controlled temperature/pressure process. The adhesion promoter layer is made from tantalum, cobalt, cobalt-iron, nickel, nickel-iron or vanadium.
