The backrest (1) for a vehicle seat has a lateral stiffening (11) at the lower section, between the side pillars (2), as part of the backrest covering (4) which is at the side pillars and their connecting upper section (3) of the backrest frame. The stiffening is composed of a number of ribs (10). The backrest cover is an injection molded plastics shell, with a recessed zone (6) to accommodate the knees of rear passengers.
