PURPOSE: A format converter for multi-speed processing is provided to improve a format conversion structure to directly read video data from a memory, convert the format of the video data and directly display an image corresponding to the video data even in the case that the image size is reduced. CONSTITUTION: A format converter includes a word buffer(30), a byte delay(40), a parallel-to-serial converter(50), and a multi-speed processing format conversion unit(60). The word buffer stores an input image in unit of words. The byte delay temporarily delays the least significant byte of the image stored in the word buffer. The parallel-to-serial converter serially converts the image inputted from the word buffer and the image inputted from the byte delay and outputs continuous video data in parallel. The format conversion unit receives the sizes of the input image and output image to provide a corresponding control signal to the word buffer and the converter and converts the format of the video data output from the converter.
