PURPOSE: Apparatus and method for controlling a hand dryer is provided to dry hands within a short time. CONSTITUTION: When an infrared ray radiated from a human body is detected by an infrared detecting sensor(66) to be converted into a digital signal in an A/D converter(68) and input into a microprocessor(60), the microprocessor arithmetically processes the signal to output it to a motor driving unit(70) and drive a motor(120). Then, air is supplied to a heater(40) by a blast fan(120a), is heated and blown to wet hands to dry the hands. After a predetermined time after the drying of the hands, the current flowing in the heater is interrupted to blow cold air at the outside to the hands by the blast fan and dry the hands. The humidity of the air which dried the hands is detected by a humidity detecting sensor(110) to be converted into a digital signal and input into the microprocessor. If the humidity is lower than the preset one stored in a RAM(64), the driving of the motor is interrupted.
