Data from an acoustic source 1 is received at a receiver 3. This data is then processed to separate the down-going or direct signal 5 from the up-going signals 6, 25. The down going signal is then used to obtain the arrival time of the signal at the receiver. The system is designed to be used in seismic surveying or acoustic range finding.
