PURPOSE: A method for maintaining and controlling a session of a communication network is provided to transmit and receive desirous packet data through a connection path set between an AT(Access Terminal) and a PDSN, thereby efficiently managing the session by using a function of an existing PCF(Packet Call Function) unit. CONSTITUTION: When an AT(10) is in idle state(S1), a PCF unit(30) monitors traffic transmitted and received on a wireless space of the AT(10). If no traffic is generated with the AT(10) for a certain time, the PCF unit(30) transmits a keep-alive request message to the AT(10) through an AN(Access Network)(20) to confirm whether a current session is available(S2,S3). The AT(10) responds to the message with a keep-alive response message(S4,S5). If the AT(10) does not receive the traffic for a determined time, the PCF unit(30) completes the corresponding session for the AT(10).
