PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laterally cutting type can opener which is stable, a rough cut edge due to slipping and a drop of a metallic piece. SOLUTION: The can opener has elongate first and second operating elements pivotally connected to each other at an intermediate between their ends and having first and second handle members respectively. The opener has a traction wheel rotatably mounted on the first operating element and a cutter blade rotatably mounted at an inclined angle on the second operating element. A first abutment surface operatively forward of the cutter blade and a second abutment surface operatively following the cutter blade are provided on the can opener to engage with an axially outer edge of a can rim. The axially outer edge of the can rim convexly deforms in the vicinity of the cutter blade when in use. The traction wheel has a radial surface and an axial surface. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
