PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply precisely a thin layer with a slot die coater. SOLUTION: Application liquid 14 is applied on a web 12 at 40 m/min by using a slot die 13 where a land length IL<SB>0</SB>of downstream side lip land 19 is 50μm, and the thin film application of wet film thickness 5μm is thus performed. Cellulose triacetate base material is used as the web 12. Before application, 2 wt.% solution of a long chain alkyl-modified polyvinyl alcohol is applied and dried and the rubbing treatment is performed. Methyl ethyl ketone solution of a liquid crystal compound is used as the application liquid. The application is made possible, and therein, the degree of evacuation is 2000 Pa and the state of formed bead is satisfactory. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
