PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet imaging apparatus not requiring a large space in which a print head can be covered surely with a cap, unnecessary suction of ink from the print head is prevented, and the structure of a maintenance unit is simplified. SOLUTION: The ink jet imaging apparatus comprises a carriage 1 moving in the main scanning direction while carrying a plurality of print heads 5a, 5b and 5c, and a maintenance unit 2 having a plurality of caps 8a, 8b and 8c covering the part of print heads 5a, 5b and 5c of the carriage 1 at the maintenance position. The carriage 1 is provided with positioning recesses 6a, 6b and 6c and the caps 8a, 8b and 8c are provided with positioning protrusions 28a, 28b and 28c engaging with the positioning recesses 6a, 6b and 6c.
