PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent crashing sound or noise caused by a separation pad or a pressure spring. SOLUTION: This paper feeder is provided with a paper feed tray 1 stacking and holding paper sheets, a paper feed roller 2 feeding paper sheets S1, S2 stacked in the paper feed tray 1, and a separation pad 3 separating the paper sheets S1, S2 when they are doubly fed. When feeding the last paper sheet S1 of a job, the paper feed roller 2 is stopped while the head paper sheet S2 of the following job is clamped between the paper feed roller 2 and the separation pad 3.
