PURPOSE: An apparatus for braking a rope for an elevator is provided to improve the barking force by reducing abrasion of a brake. CONSTITUTION: A movable brake(23) is approached and separated in parallel with a fixing brake(21) by placing a rope between them. A brake operating unit(31) is installed opposite to the movable brake(23) by placing the fixing brake(21) between them. The brake operating unit(31) goes and returns a predetermined block from a fixing frame(10) to make the movable brake(23) approach and separate to the fixing brake(21). A driver(50) drives the brake operating unit(31) so that the movable brake(23) is separated from the fixing brake(21) in a normal operation of an elevator and the movable brake(23) approaches to the fixing brake(21) to brake the rope in an abnormal operation of the elevator.
