PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of predicting subjective quality ratings of video sequences by taking into account compression at both extremes of the subjective quality ratings and nonlinearity unique to DMOS (Difference Means Opinion Scores) values. SOLUTION: The method of predicting subjective quality ratings obtains perceptual difference scores PD for a 'Worst' quality video training sequence and for a 'Best' quality video training sequence (12, 14). Corresponding subjective quality rating values on a subjective quality rating scale, which are major causes to compression at both extremes of the subjective quality rating scale are assigned to the Worst and Best perceptual difference scores PD (Worst) and PD (Best). The perceptual difference scores are converted into the subjective quality rating scores through calculation on the basis of the worst and Best perceptual difference scores and heuristically derived constants.
