PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device which is inexpensive and is small- sized and light-weight and realizes moving picture photographing and still picture photographing of high definition and to provide and an image pickup method for the image pickup device. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is provided with an imaging device 106 which converts a subject image passing an optical lens group including a variable power lens group 102 to a video signal, a power varying operation control means 111c which controls the position of the variable power lens group to change the size of a light reception area on the imaging device and performs power varying operation, an imaging device control means 109 which sets a first mode of reading out a part of the effective pixel area of the imaging device 106 as a video signal and a second mode of reading out the whole of the effective pixel area as a video signal, a mode selection means 118 which selects the modes, and a movement range control means which changes the movement range of the variable power lens group in accordance with the state of the modes. A control means is provided which controls the position of the variable power lens group so that a calculated focal length ratio before mode switching and that after mode switching may be equal to each other.
