PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of obtaining good electromagnetic conversion characteristics without any reductions in head contact even when an MR head is unevenly worn during magnetic head traveling. SOLUTION: This thin film magnetic head is constructed in such a manner that a reading magnetic gap 11 having a magneto-resistance effect layer (MR layer) 8 is formed between a pair of support substrates 2, 3, and the upper end surface of the magneto-resistance effect layer (MR layer) 8 is exposed to the sliding surface 4 of a magnetic recording medium. The thin film magnetic head is characterized in that grooves 12, 12 are formed along the sliding direction of the magnetic recording medium in both sides of the reading magnetic gap 11 in the width direction of the sliding surface 4 of the magnetic recording medium.
