<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a background detection process for analyzing luminous intensity information acquired from many regions extending to a default document area in order to restrict the influence of the luminous intensity information acquired from a non-document area, when determining a background level of a scanning document. <P>SOLUTION: This method for generating a background peak in the scanning document has a step for generating a first histogram from pixels in a first document area showing the whole page, a step for generating a second histogram from pixels in a second document region, a step for discriminating a first white peak from the first histogram, a step for discriminating a second white peak from the second histogram, a step for comparing the first white peak with at least one selected from the smallest threshold, the largest threshold, and a threshold generated as a function of the second white peak, and a step for discriminating a third white peak from within the range of the first histogram defined by a function of the first white peak and a function of the second white peak. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
