PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern recognition device capable of shortening a processing time and reducing a cost. SOLUTION: When discriminating a coin by using this pattern recognition device, first of all, both front and back faces of the coin are imaged by a CCD, and image signals of both faces of the coin are transmitted to a discrimination unit. The discrimination unit binarizes the image signals of both faces of the coin by different systems respectively, and generates a front-face ring data group and a back-face ring data group corresponding to both front and back faces. Then, each data corresponding to both front and back faces in the front- face ring data group and the back-face ring data group is added together, to thereby generate a front-and-back face added ring data group. Then, all data in the front-and-back face added ring data group are added to acquire a ring data group total added value, and the ring data group total added value is compared with a reference value set beforehand, to thereby discriminate genuineness of the coin.
