PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an image from being degraded even in the case of incidence of strong light on the vicinity of a light shielding (OB) area of an image pickup means. SOLUTION: An image pickup device is provided which has an image pickup means (4) and light shielding area abnormality detection means (17 and 18), and the image pickup means (4) has a light reception area formed by a plurality of pixels for photoelectric conversion and the light shielding area formed by a plurality pixels for photoelectric conversion, which are shielded from light to form a black reference signal. The light shielding area abnormality detection means (17 and 18) divide the light shielding area of the image pickup means into a plurality of blocks and integrate the output of each block of the light shielding area and compare integral values of individual blocks to detect the abnormality of pixels in the light shielding area.
