PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device of retrieval enabling retrieval of candidates with a target name by a small amount of input operation to the utmost. SOLUTION: The method for retrieval is provided with a data base for sorting out groups of pieces of character string data constituted of character strings to be retrieved into fields and being equipped with a plurality of reference tables sorted into kinds of characters for each field, and the method comprises: reading each of the reference tables of a specified field in a RAM drive from the data base by specifying the field to be retrieved; inputting character strings the retrieval of which is desired in an input column in an input picture one by one from the head; extracting all candidate the front of which conforms to the inputted character strings whenever a character is inputted; displaying all the extracted character strings on a retrieval result display part; and specifying character string data as the data to be searched by specifying the target character string data among displayed retrieval results.
