An ink jet recording material having substantially no tackiness and capable of receiving thereon ink images having high resistance to cracking and blotting has an ink receiving layer formed on a support and including (A) hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose having a 2% aqueous solution viscosity of 200 cP at 20 DEG C, and optionally (B) a N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer and (C) a cationic resin.
