The thread deflector (26) moves back and forth between a position at rest, and an operational position. Its path of motion (B) lies transversely across the section of shuttle thread (G) which runs between shuttle (7) and sewing opening (20). It moves continually into a position causing shuttle thread deflection, when the feed direction of the sewing material holder (4) lies within a given angular range (W). In this position, a projected line (L) of the shuttle thread between shuttle and sewing opening, bisects the angle.
