The machine (1) to bend a flat workpiece (7) has a lower cheek (2), an upper cheek (4) and a bending cheek (6). The workpiece is clamped between the upper and lower cheeks. The bending cheek has a narrow light beam (11) aligned parallel to its swing axis (5), to swing with it towards a receiver. When the swing cheek has pivoted by a given angle, and retracted by the natural spring reassertion of the workpiece, a clear light path between the source and the receiver shows that the workpiece has been bent into the correct angle, and a blocked light path indicates that the workpiece bend has not been achieved and further bending actions are required.
