The invention concerns a silent diffuser for compressed gas expansion, comprising a tube (3) for intake of the gas to be expanded, an elongated sheath (1) containing a lining (6) made of a sound damping material, one end of said sheath communicating with the tube (3) through a series of holes (9), and its opposite end emerging laterally outside through a series of orifices (2) for exhausting the expanded gas, the total surface of said orifices being significantly greater than that of said holes, such that the gas passes therethrough at sonic velocity and its velocity upstream of said intake is maintained at a subsonic level. The intake tube (3) penetrates into the elongated sheath (1) and extends centrally over the whole length thereof while being closed at its end opposite the one through which the gas to expanded enters, the lining (6) taking up the entire space extending between the sheath inner wall and the tube; the series of holes (9) is arranged directly on the tube (3) wall, immediately downstream of the location whereat it penetrates into the sheath (1).
