DNA VACCINE FOR PERIODONTAL DISEASE

A gene encoding the outer membrane protein of Porphyromonas gingivalis causative of periodontal disease is transferred into a mammalian expression system plasmid and then this plasmid is administered to a mouse so as to induce the production of an antibody specific to the outer membrane protein. This antibody significantly inhibits the aggregation of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus gordonii closely relating to the onset and progress of periodontal disease. Therefore, the gene encoding this outer membrane protein is highly useful as a DNA vaccine for preventing or treating periodontal disease.
