Method has the following steps: placing of a first two serial resistances (R1, R2) in a circuit, placing of a further two serial resistances (R3, R4) in parallel to the first two resistances. At least one of each of the two pairs of resistances has a high temperature dependency. A resistance from each pair (R1, R4) is inserted in a reference environment with constant heat capacity while the other two resistances are inserted in the substrate to be measured. All the resistances are heated at a constant rate and the voltage resulting from the heating measured. The invention also relates to a corresponding measurement instrument and an arrangement for determining substrate water content using at least two measurement instruments linked to a central analysis unit.
