Activation of peroxy compounds is effected using a combination of a hydroxycarboxylic acid ester and a 2-12C carboxylic acid amide. Activation of peroxy compounds is effected using a combination of a hydroxycarboxylic acid ester of formula (I) and a 2-12C carboxylic acid amide. Also included are Independent claims for use of the combination of a hydroxycarboxylic acid ester of formula (I) and a 2-12C carboxylic acid amide as (i) an activator for (especially inorganic) peroxy compounds used in oxidation, detergent, cleansing or disinfecting solutions; (ii) an ingredient in bleaching colored stains in textile washing, especially in aqueous surfactant-containing baths; or (iii) an ingredient in washing solutions for hard surfaces, especially in bleaching colored stains on tableware. R1 = 1-5C alkyl or alkenyl or an aryl group optionally substituted by 1-5C alkyl or alkenyl; R2 and R3 = H or 1-10C alkylene, alkenylene or arylene optionally bonded to form an optionally aromatic ring system; and M = H or an alkali metal.
