The tool change system includes a tool changer (11) supporting a rotatable axially movable gripper (17) with at least three identical angularly off-set gripper tongs (18 to 21) and forming an intermediate store. One of the gripper tongs holds the used tool and a second places a new tool into the work spindle (7). At least one gripper tong can have a protective quiver (32) with cleaning system for cleaning the tool tension cone which fits therein.
