The method involves monitoring the battery damping of the high frequency component of the on-board system supply voltage generated by the generator and detecting inadequate damping as a battery fault condition. The variation of the voltage is detected over a sampling interval and evaluated. An Independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle on-board electrical system with at least one generator and battery.
