A vehicle tilt adjustment type steering device comprising a vehicle body, a front column member fixed to the vehicle body, a rear column member connected to the front column member so that the rear column member is swingable in a tilt adjustment range for travel, a fixed gear installed on one of the front and rear column members, a movable gear installed on the other, the movable gear being brought into meshing with the fixed gear during the fixing of the rear column member in the tilt position, the movable gear being swung to cancel the meshing between the two gears during the release of the rear column member from the tilt position, wherein the rear column member being capable of tilting across the tilt adjustment range for travel to an upper predetermined position, and a spring and/or a locking mechanism is provided by which the rear column member tilted to the predetermined position is held in this position.
