Variants of the tridegin polypeptide having the 68 amino acid sequence defined in the specification, are new. Variants of the tridegin polypeptide having the 68 amino acid sequence defined in the specification, are new. The variants (I) have one of the following modifications: (a) substitution of at least one Cys by some other amino acid; (b) substitution of Lys2 or 7, His10, Gly12, Leu24, Tyr31, Phe34 or 58, Arg39, Ile45, Met48, Asp50, Pro55 or 65, or Asn60 by some other amino acid; (c) deletion at either end provided the remaining peptide includes at least the sequence Asp-Asp-Ile-Tyr-Gln-Arg-X-Val-X-Phe-Pro-X-Leu-Pro-Leu, where X is any amino acid; and/or (d) covalent attachment of poly(ethylene glycol). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) compounds (II) that contain at least one (I); and (2) method for preparing (I) and (II) by genetic engineering or peptide-chemical methods.
