PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an array waveguide grating which eliminate a need of adjustment of a signal before branching to reduce the number of parts and the insertion loss and to obtain an array waveguide grating module, and an optical communication system. SOLUTION: First and second channel waveguides 102 and 103, a channel waveguide array 104, and first and second fan-shaped slab waveguides 105 and 106 are arranged on a substrate 101 of an array waveguide grating 100. Exponential function-shaped optical waveguides having shapes or sizes varied by channels are arranged in a second boundary part 109 on the exit side, which connects the second channel waveguide 103 and the second fan-shaped slab waveguide 106, and optical frequency characteristics are changed or corrected in accordance with signal light of each of channels after branching. Thus adjustment of the level of signal light of each channel is made unnecessary or is reduced, and the insertion loss is reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
