<p>1314201 Casting machines DOW CHEMICAL CO 1 July 1970 [1 July 1969] 31925/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division F2] A pipe coupling 28 for use in lines carrying molten metal includes a stud fitting 32 having an axial bore and a second fitting 34 having a bore throughout its length, which includes a lower section, shaped to receive the bulbous end of the stud fitting 32, and an upper section connecting with pipe 30 arranged at an oblique angle to the lower bore section. As shown the lower bore section is frusto-conical in shape. Although, as described, the sealing engagement of the fittings 32, 34 is sufficient, a rod 37a, depressed by rocking lever 37b and engaging a knob (38) on top of the fitting 34 assures no leakage between the fittings 32, 34. As shown, the pipe coupling 28 is submerged in a bath 12 of molten metal 14, e.g. zinc, aluminium, magnesium or alloys thereof. The molten metal is transferred to a shotwell 20 for injection into a die. The molten metal 14 is withdrawn from the bath 12 by the impeller 22a of a centrifugal pump 22 to prime passageway 26 and then valve 24a is opened to permit the molten metal to flow through passageway 30 in pipe-line 18. When sufficient metal for injection into the die has been obtained in the shotwell 20 the valve 24a is closed. The pump 22 maintains an idling speed except when the valve 24a is opened when its speed is accordingly increased.</p> |
