<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge light type surface light emitting device not causing a bright spot or a bright line due to the projection part of a light transmission plate side face. <P>SOLUTION: For an edge light type surface light emitting device, a line light source is arranged on at least one of two opposing side faces of a light transmission plate composed of a transparent resin plate, a light scattering part is provided corresponding to the display area of a liquid crystal panel on the back surface of the light transmission plate in such a gradation pattern that an area rate is larger at a part away from the line light source than at the part near the line light source, and the two side faces forming the right angle with the side face where the line light source of the light transmission plate is arranged are provided with the projection part by projecting a part of the resin plate.
